The SCA is committed to ensuring that all coaches have the knowledge and tools they need to provide safe, high-quality instruction for athletes across Saskatchewan. As part of this commitment, all performance cheer coaches are required to complete the SCA Online Technical Evaluation, which are a series of exams designed in alignment with Cheer Canada standards.

These exams cover the foundational areas of coaching, rules and safety, and skills and scoring for Pom, Jazz, and Hip Hop. They are intended to both certify new coaches and keep experienced coaches up to date with current standards and practices.

Introduction to Coaching

• Mandatory for all first-year coaches/CITs.
• Recommended for all previously certified coaches.
• Includes a PowerPoint presentation, which can be a helpful resource throughout the remaining exams.

Rules and Safety

• Required for All Star and Scholastic coaches.
• Coaches must complete the exam(s) for the team type(s) they are coaching.

Skills and Scoring

• Required for one or more of the three Cheer Canada/SCA categories: Pom, Jazz, and Hip Hop.
• Coaches must successfully complete the exam(s) for the category or categories they are coaching.
• The exam fee covers all categories.
• While not required, it is recommended that all coaches certify in all three categories to allow flexibility in coaching assignments.

Required Documents

Please review the following documents prior to completing your exams:

• Cheer Canada Performance Cheer Age Grids, Divisions and Scoresheets
• Cheer Canada Image Policy
• ALL STAR: IASF Dance Rule Book, Dance Glossary
• SCHOOL: Cheer Canada Performance Cheer (Dance) Rule Book

Technical Evaluation Validity and Re-Certification

• The Technical Evaluation is valid for three years.
• Recertification only requires completion of the Rules and Safety exam(s) for All Star and/or Scholastic, depending on the team(s) coached.
• Skills and Scoring are not required, as coaches have already demonstrated knowledge in these areas during initial evaluation.

Independent Completion Requirement

The SCA requires coaches to complete all certification exams independently. Certification is granted to individuals, not coaching pairs or teams. This ensures that every certified coach has demonstrated the necessary knowledge to coach safely and effectively on their own.
